MeshCon 10-15 Oct. 2014
Fashion and Technology Week
Technische Universität Berlin

The benefits of participatory production in the textile industry. Software developers, hardware makers, fashion designers, pattern creators, knitters, and textile manipulators exchange ideas for fair personalized fashion and future technologies of production.

What is MeshCon

How to reap the benefits of participatory production in the textile industry is the topic of the first edition of MeshCon taking place in Berlin from October 10-15, 2014.

We are developing concepts and Free and Open Source technologies for fair and environment friendly production of garments and textiles at home and in the industry. MeshCon Berlin brings together industry representatives, fashion designers, pattern creators, knitters, textile manipulators, FOSS developers and DIY hardware makers. The event offers a place to exchange new ideas in personalized fashion and technologies in the garment production.

Participants from across the world are joining the five day event at locations around Berlin city. The first day will start with a conference at the Technische Universität Berlin. In the following days you can learn how to create your own fashion and wearables at workshops at the Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. office.

Some of the projects presented at the event are below.

Beautiful Knitting with your PC

Use a digital image from your computer and simple software such as Paint or GIMP under Windows, Mac or Linux and create beautiful knits. We upgrade your old Brother knitting machines with our AYAB electronic shields. In a few easy steps you replace the existing control board of your machine with the AYAB controller. Then plugin in the cable with the Arduino part to your computer and start knitting with your PC like in the 21st century!

Wearables: Fashion Gaming with Feeling Forces

We are creating compelling wearables that provide exciting haptic feedback. Our approach achieves a low hardware footprint by leveraging the user's own muscle power through electrical-muscle stimulation. We demonstrate how our research at the Human Computer Interaction lab in the Hasso Plattner Institute enables wearable devices to become more immersive without sacrificing their form factor.

Pattern Software for Fashion Makers

Valentina is a new Free and Open Source patternmaking software for fashion designers and manufacturers with an app like interface. Valentina patterns can fit an actual person using precision formulas and real body measurements. Valentina provides tools to reduce the amount of manual work required for patternmaking. The project uses open data formats which are readable by any computer system.

Hard Core Vein: Wearable Tube Suit Prototype

Hard Core Vein is a wearable prototype suit like piece that combines fashion with technology, music, and 3D printed illustrations. The suit is made of transparent tubes with ink in them. The tubes form patterns and illustrative figures, and are connected to small pumps that respond to musical beats. The liquid can thus be made to move to the rhythm of the music, just like blood being pumped through arteries.

Body Apps Measurement Solution for Customized Production

Body Apps helps users to collect and manage their body data. Individual measurements can be stored offline or online where they can be shared with garment sellers that can match their cloth to their customers. Based on the data customized patterns can be generated for tailor-made clothes. The app generates 3D figures, that can ultimately be dressed and exported to virtual realities. The project is supported by Google Summer of Code 2014.

Embroidery for the Masses

Embroidermodder is a free machine embroidery software tool that supports a variety of formats and allows the user to add custom modifications to their embroidery designs. One of the byproducts of Embroidermodder 2 was the creation of libembroidery. libembroidery is written in C. It supports reading and writing of a variety of embroidery formats, and several vector formats which are not commonly used in embroidery.
